Judy Ann Steffen Porter, 67, a Deer Park teacher and dairy farmer, died in a tragic car accident on Friday, Aug. 2.
She was predeceased by her husband, Larry, in 2007; and her father, Donald Steffen, in 2007.
She is survived by her three children, Stephanie (Scott) Littrel of Deer Park, David (Denise) Porter of Tillamook, Ore., and Annemarie Campbell of Monroe; six grandchildren, Derek, Colin, Chloe, Ryan, Robyn and Rosy; her mother, Elma Steffen of Monroe, Wash.; four siblings, Mary (David) Douglas of Calhoun, Ga., Eileen (Rich) Hartzell of Deer Park, Nancy (Rick) Oliver of Puyallup, Wash., and Wayne (Brenda) Steffen of Anitoch, Calif.; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Judy was born on July 29, 1946, in Everett, Wash. She grew up on the family dairy farm outside of Monroe, graduating from Monroe High School in 1964. She attended Washington State University, earning a Phi Beta Kappa key and graduating in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in German and English Education.
She spent the 1967-68 academic year attending the University of Bonn in Germany, where she made lifelong friends.
Judy met Larry at the State Holstein Youth Tour in 1963. She later renewed their friendship in college and they were married in 1970. They returned to the family farm on Dahl Road in 1971 after his Army obligation. There they farmed together until his death.
Judy was also a teacher and librarian at Deer Park Middle School. She taught Drama, being one of the driving forces behind “Spike Spring” and other productions.
She recently took on the journalism class and school newspaper. Judy spent many hours before and after school working with students. She also spent countless hours working with kids as a 4-H leader.
A Vigil Rosary will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. and a Funeral Mass on Friday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m., both of St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church, E602 Sixth St., Deer Park, with the Rev. Albert Grasher as celebrant.
At St. Mary’s Presentation, Judy was recognized for the many hats she wore. Her family requests the ladies attending the funeral wear a hat in her honor.
Interment will be held at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Deer Park.
Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, will be in charge of funeral and interment arrangements.
