The Spokane County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes and Forensics units assisted Whitman County Sheriff’s Office with a homicide investigation at N28709 Schwartgen Road in Chattaroy.
Investigators spent the day looking for the body of 17-year-old Donavin Stapert, who was believed to have been killed earlier this month in Malden, Wash. They spent most of the morning collecting forensic evidence near a site of some freshly turned dirt and started digging this afternoon.
Investigators located a body buried approximately 4-5 feet underground in a heavily wooded area at about 2 p.m. The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office identified the body as Stapert on Friday.
The exact cause of death will be determined after the medical examiner's office receives toxicology reports. Various media reports claim Stapert died of a methamphetamine overdose.
Three people — Bobby Bilderback, James Ramson and Chasity D. Barkhuff — were arrested earlier this week in connection with the Stapert case.
Barkhuff pleaded not guilty in Whitman County Superior Court on Thursday in the cover-up of Stapert's death. Ramson will make a court appearance on Friday.
