Medical Lake’s Becky Trout snapped a 28-28 fourth quarter tie with a three-pointer and the Cardinal defense shut down the Deer Park offense rest of the way to pull out a 35-31 win on Friday.
The Lady Stags, despite having their best offensive performance of the year, were limited to a Savanna Sitton free throw and field goal in the final 6:28 as they fell to 0-4 on the young season.
Deer Park head coach Chuck Chaffee said his team is getting used to play together.
The Lady Stags led 21-16 at halftime, the first time this season they led at intermission.
A Tatiana Rodriguez pushed the lead to 25-16 early in the third quarter.
The Cardinals spent the rest of the quarter chipping into the Lady Stag lead. Medical Lake finally caught Deer Park on two free throws by Brandi Wren.
A Makenna Adams tied the game at 28-28 before Trout hit her three-pointer.
Medical Lake’s Sabrina Earle, who scored nine of her game-high 14 points in the first half, added a field goal and free throw to stretch the Cardinal lead to 34-28 with 4:14 to play.
A Sitton basket cut the lead to 34-31 with 2 minutes left but the Lady Stags could not get any closer.
“They (Lady Stags) learned something tonight,” Chaffee said. “They learned what is needed to finish a game off.”
Sitton led the Lady Stags with 11 points, the first time a Deer Park player had scored in double figures this season.
