WIAA board OKs league classifications for 2012-14

The Great Northern League, Northeast A and Northeast 2B leagues will have new looks in the upcoming school year following school classification enrollments approved by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s executive board on Jan. 23.
As expected the Great Northern League will welcome back Colville to the Class 2A ranks after the school’s average enrollment for grades 10-12 jumped to 569.75 full-time students for the first three months of the current school year.
Class 2A schools in the next school year will have between 1,085-513 students in grades 10-12.
Deer Park has 592 students, according to the WIAA enrollment count. Pullman barely made the Class 2A cut with 517 students.
Colville, a current NE-A school, will take Medical Lake’s place in the GNL. The Cardinals, who barely miss qualifying for the Class 1A ranks two years ago, saw its grades 10-12 enrollment shrink to 458.25 students.
The Class 1A ranks encompass schools with WIAA enrollments between 208-512 students.
Medical Lake has the highest enrollment in the NE-A. Kettle Falls, which competed in the Northeast 2B League last year, has the smallest enrollment in the newly configured NE-A with 245 students.
Riverside’s WIAA count is 400.75, making it the NE-A’s third largest school (behind Medical Lake and Lakeside).
The loss of Kettle Falls is the only change in the NE2B. Reardan is the conference’s biggest school with a WIAA enrollment of 179.88 students, slightly ahead of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (176.01). Springdale ranks third at 166.25.
St. George’s in the league’s smallest school at 98.38 students.
