Norella “Bernie” Bosold-Umphenour, 73, went to be with the Lord, accompanied by His Angels, on June 12, 2011, after a brief but valiant fight against lung cancer.
She was born on June 29, 1937, in Superior, Minn., to Bernard “Barney” and Lillian Bowles. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1955. She later married Julius B. Bosold and had five children.
After 22 years with Banner Furnace and Fuel Co. as a credit manager, she retired in 2003. Prior to that, she worked at Boyle Fuel and in earlier years as a school bus driver on the Bryant School route.
Over the years, she had belonged to the Moose Lodge and the Elk’s
She enjoyed a variety of interests and activities during her life, including card and board games, writing poetry, golfing, dancing, antiques, panning for gold, the “Zags” and travel. However, her favorite thing was entertaining family and friends.
She was known for her excellent cooking, lively sense of humor and a warm and welcome spirit that drew so many to her.
The greatest joy in her life though, without a doubt, was her children and grandchildren. She was an amazing grandmother, spending as much time as she could with the kids. They were at her house frequently or went to eat, shopping, movies, theme parks or sporting events. She attended numerous ballet recitals, plays, concerts, track, cross country and gymnastic meets, basketball games, including Hoopfest, and graduations.
She was incredibly generous with her kids and grandkids and always tried to make everyone feel special.
As a model of love, sacrifice and service, there are no words to describe how much she is already missed.
Bernie was preceded in death by both parents and her brother James Fly.
She is survived by her husband, James Umphenour of Spokane; previous husband, Julius Bosold of Spokane; sons, Mark Bosold of Pullman and Matthew Bosold of Spokane; daughters, Kim Bosold of Spokane, Julie Watson of Liberty Lake and Jan Fall of Spokane; seven granddaughters; five grandsons; sisters, Libby Sharp and Linda Anderson; and a brother, Rex Bowles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1104 W. Heroy, Spokane, at noon on Thursday, June 23, 2011. A rosary will be held on Wednesday, June 22, at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice House of Spokane.
