Thieves strike GreenHouse's thrift store

Thieves broke into the GreenHouse Community Center thrift store at N31 Main St. in Deer Park early Thursday morning at took a small floor safe containing more than $250.
It appears the thieves, after disabling the outside security camera, forced open the back door and headed for the safe, which would have taken more than one person to carry.
They also ransacked a portion of the store but nothing else appeared to have been stolen.
The store opened for business at its normal hour on Thursday.

Concert series announces summer lineup

The 10th annual Deer Park Summer Concert Series will feature some familiar faces this year.
The concert series will kick off on June 22 at Mix Park with a performance by 6 Foot Swing. The band was among the performers last year.
Other bands scheduled for this summer are:
• Stagecoast West on June 29.
• The steel drum band Bram Bata from the Tri-Cities on July 6.
• Bluegrass band Big Red Barn on July 13.
• The Master Class Jazz Orchestra on July 20.
• Men of Rhythm, featuring a “Big Band” sound, on Aug. 3.
• The Sara Brown Band, specializing in blues and soul music, on Aug. 10.

Deputies wounded in shootout receive Medals of Honor

Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies Michael Northway and Joseph M. Spink received the state’s Law Enforcement Medal of Honor in ceremonies today in Olympia.
Northway and Spink were seriously injured while trying to apprehend a federal fugitive in north Spokane. The deputies were able to return the gunfire, forcing the suspect, Charlie Wallace, to flee the scene.
The fugitive later led various law enforcement personnel on a car chase that ended when the fleeing suspect crashed at the intersection of Crawford Avenue and U.S. Highway 395 in Deer Park. Moments later he took his own life.

Candidate filing season nears

The 2013 election season, limited mainly to local races, will officially start on May 13.
Residents must officially file their candidacy in the election office where they reside, in person or online, between May 13-17.
The only regional race is the state senate seat currently held by Republican John Smith, who was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Bob Morton. The race this fall is to fill the final year remaining on Morton’s four-year term.
The senate race carries a $421.06 filing fee. State law bases filing fees on 10 percent of the position’s annual salary.

Thieves gum up the works at ATMs

Two Spokane area financial institution ATM machines have fallen prey to a new scam. The scam involves the suspect(s) super gluing the cancel button, or another similar type button, down on the machine so the victims transaction cannot able be processed. The result of this technique is that it is possible the machine will not release the victim's debit or credit card.
