Deer Park School Board changes course, hires Hanson as superintendent

In a surprising move, the Deer Park School Board has decided to go with Curriculum Director Travis Hanson as its new superintendent.
Hanson will replace Becky Berg on July 1.
The school board had offered the job to Spokane School District 81's Executive Director of Secondary School's Jon Swett last month, but could not come to a contract agreement.

Starbuck found guilty of murdering ex-wife

It took a Spokane County Superior Court jury less than a day to find Clay Starbuck guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Chanin, in her Deer Park home in December 2011.
Starbuck, who took the stand in his own defense on May 29, faces up to life in prison.
His defense team said they would appeal the verdict.
The jury, which heard closing arguments from both sides and final deliberation instructions on Monday, reached its decision late Tuesday evening.

DP School Board decides to go with Swett

After three days of interviews and weekend of deliberations and negotiations the Deer Park School Board selected Jon Swett as the new school superintendent on Monday.
Swett, who oversees the high schools at Spokane School District 81, currently lives in the Riverside School District but his three children attend the Deer Park schools.
Swett, who replaced Becky Berg, will assume the superintendent post on July 1.

Thieves strike GreenHouse's thrift store

May 16, 2013

Thieves broke into the GreenHouse Community Center thrift store at N31 Main St. in Deer Park early Thursday morning at took a small floor safe containing more than $250.
It appears the thieves, after disabling the outside security camera, forced open the back door and headed for the safe, which would have taken more than one person to carry.
They also ransacked a portion of the store but nothing else appeared to have been stolen.
The store opened for business at its normal hour on Thursday.

Concert series announces summer lineup

May 8, 2013

The 10th annual Deer Park Summer Concert Series will feature some familiar faces this year.
The concert series will kick off on June 22 at Mix Park with a performance by 6 Foot Swing. The band was among the performers last year.
Other bands scheduled for this summer are:
• Stagecoast West on June 29.
• The steel drum band Bram Bata from the Tri-Cities on July 6.
• Bluegrass band Big Red Barn on July 13.
• The Master Class Jazz Orchestra on July 20.
• Men of Rhythm, featuring a “Big Band” sound, on Aug. 3.
• The Sara Brown Band, specializing in blues and soul music, on Aug. 10.
