Tentative agreement reached on Avista rate hike plan

Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) staff members announced on Monday an all-party agreement to settle Avista’s request to increase electric and natural gas rates for its customers in Washington.
The three-member commission, which is not bound by the agreement, will make a final decision on the utility’s rate-hike request this fall.
The settlement agreement calls for new rates to begin Jan. 1, 2015. Public hearings are scheduled next week in Spokane for customers to comment on the agreement.

Civil Air Patrol squadron may start at DP Airport

An informational meeting to gauge interest in starting a Civil Air Patrol squadron will be held 6 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the Deer Park Airport Administrative Building on Cedar Road.
Civil Air Patrol is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force

SCFD4 bond issue headed for passage

Spokane County Fire District No. 4 voters have agreed to a 20-year bond plan that will upgrade some district facilities and equipment.
The $14 million measure was on its way to approval by a 4,516-2,422 margin in the Aug. 5 primary election. The 65 percent approval rating was easily above the 60 percent needed for passage.
Among the fire district bond issue plans is to improve the 30-year-old Station 41 in Deer Park that has outgrown its present space considerations and to upgrade a large portion of the fire district’s front line response apparatus.

McMorris Rodgers prevails in primary election

UPDATED: Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, seeking her sixth term, easily beat back challenges from three other candidates in yesterday’s primary election.
McMorris Rodgers, a Republican, garnered 60,351 (51.74 percent) in the first day of election tabulations. Democrat Joseph Pakootas finished second in the primary with 33,643 votes.
The top two candidates in all primary elections advance to the November general election.
The other candidates were Independent Dave Wilson (13,157) and Republican Tom Horne (9,501).
