Whisman to seek a third term

March 22, 2013

Deer Park Mayor Robert Whisman has announced his intention to seek a third term this fall.
He said the decision was spurred by the encouragement of friends and citizens asking him to seek another four-year term. He is the first city resident to announce his candidacy for the position.
If elected, Whisman will join Earl Mix and Jim Swinyard as having served more than two terms in the mayoral position.
“In 1989, when I first began my service to the citizens as a councilmember for the city, I pledged to help provide a comfortable and affordable community, where citizens would be proud to call home,” Whisman said in a written statement announcing his re-election decision. “I have honored this pledge throughout my service as a councilmember and through my almost two terms as mayor . . .”
Whisman, who was raised in Deer Park (he graduated from Deer Park High School in 1978), detailed the improvements in the business community last week. He noted that such businesses as Bi-Mart, Northwest Steel Fabrication, Autozone and Deer Park Urgent Care have located in the city since he assumed the mayor’s job eight years ago.
“We are still at work on developing the infrastructure of the large area of industrial land east of town, which has the potential to bring good paying jobs to Deer Park,” he noted in his re-election statement.
Whisman also pointed out that the city has made significant upgrades in its street and water systems during his time as mayor.
