For the third time in less than two months, the city of Deer Park had to say good-bye to one of its former officials with the passing of Mike Burdette on June 11. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. June 16 at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. The 88-year-old Burdette served on the city council and airport board along with being a member of various community organizations. His death follows the recent passing of former City Councilman Bill Galvery and City Councilman/Mayor Robert Dano.
Born Sept. 23, 1919, in Onaga, Kan., Burdette moved to the Williams Valley area in 1929 and graduated from Deer Park High School in 1941. He served in the Army during World War II. He retired as a dairy farmer and rural mail carrier and moved to Deer Park in 1981. He served on the airport board and was appointed to the Deer Park City Council on Oct. 17, 1984. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 1989. Current Mayor Robert Whisman served with Burdette on the city council in the late 1980s. He said that Burdette, a firm opponent of any new taxes, possessed a “strong personality.” The mayor ordered the flag at city hall be flown at half mast for the rest of this week. He married Betty Wright in November 1946. They had two sons, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Among the community groups the Burdettes were involved with include the Tri-County Settlers Association, Williams Valley Grange and Woodland Cemetery Association. |
