A memorial service will be 2 p.m. May 17 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chewelah followed by a reception for former Springdale and Chewelah teacher Frank F. Dexter, 90, who died on April 2 in Snohomish, Wash.
Born on Dec. 18, 1917, in Gage, Okla., he graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1943 and received his teacher’s certificate from Washington State University. He began his teaching career in Montour, Idaho, where he taught algebra and English, and coached baseball and a six-man football team. Later he spent six years in Battleground, Wash., teaching English and history and then two years in Springdale before coming to Chewelah. Mr. Dexter taught English and debate at Chewelah’s Jenkins High School for 21 years until his retirement in 1975. He lived in Chewelah from 1954-2007. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Dexter Klingbeil, in 2003 and by a granddaughter, Sharon Klingbeil, in 2007. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne; five children, Joy Rockway, San Diego, Calif,; Roy Dexter of Rio Vista, Calif., Frank A. Dexter of Trinidad; Lefa Mitchell of Snohomish, and Harry Dexter of Hillsboro, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
