City expects street construction to start in June
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

The city of Deer Park, which expects to award a pair of street construction contracts to Inland Asphalt at its May 7 city council meeting, plans on beginning the East Crawford overlay project next month.

Inland Asphalt is the apparent lowest bidder on the project, which will entail grinding off 2 inches of the roadway from Forest Avenue to Main Street and repaving that section.

Inland Asphalt’s bid of $252,788 was more than $11,000 less than the bid placed by Spokane Rock Products and $140,000 less than city officials estimated.

Director of Community Services Roger Krieger said the excess state and federal grant funds earmarked for the project must be returned to those government agencies.

The overlay program should start in June, he said, and should be completed within 2-3 weeks.

Inland Asphalt also submitted an apparent winning bid of $363,888 for the street preservation program that will entail grinding and repaving various side streets within the city.
Spokane Rock Products’ bid was $451,923.

The bid was 9 cents a square foot less than last year’s preservation program and 26 cents per square foot less than was budgeted.

The savings, Krieger said, could mean more streets added to the program this year, but no official decision has been made.
