City may find green by going green
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Going green by city residents could mean a load of green for city of Deer Park coffers.

Under the new contract with Waste Management of Spokane, the funds generated by recyclables placed in the garbage collection blue bins and the large green containers at city hall and at Deer Park Heat and Cool at Railroad Avenue and Second Street will be returned to the city.

Under the old agreement with Sunshine Recycling, recycling funds remained with the company.

Deer Park City Clerk/Treasurer Lisa Kelling said she did not know how much money the recycling effort will generate.

In a report earlier this month to the city council, Waste Management’s Steve Wulf said he was pleasantly surprised by the amount of recycling generated by city residents.

Kelling said the city council has not decided where the recycling funds will be placed within the city budget. A decision will probably be made once the first recycling check is delivered to city hall.

In an unrelated matter, Wulf noted that more than 100 city residents have also signed up for the “Clean Green” receptacles for yard waste.
