Strong fourth quarter carries Stags past Eagles

January 25, 2014

Deer Park center Avery Miller tossed in a game-high 16 points in the Stags' 52-45 win over West Valley on Friday.

The Deer Park Stags got a rebound basket by Travis Pierce and three free throws to hold off the West Valley Eagles 52-45 on Friday.
The Eagles had cut the Stags’ lead to 47-45 on a three-point play by Brennen Folkins with 1:19 to play. Pierce answered with a put-back basket and Deer Park iced the game with free throws by Canyon Nielson, Avery Miller and Nathan Guske.
The win improved the Stags’ Great Northern League record to 2-5 and 6-9 overall. West Valley fell to 3-3, 10-4.
Deer Park, behind the inside play of Miller, took an early 8-0 lead only to have West Valley, relying on the outside shooting of Alex Hall, cut the lead to 27-24 by halftime.
Miller led all scorers with 16 points while Hall led the Eagles with 13 points.
The Stags managed to keep the Eagles at bay in the second half, including a long-range jumper by Nic Clough that boost the Deer Park lead to 39-32 late in the third quarter.
West Valley finally tied the game at 39-39 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a three-pointer Dylan Steen.
Deer Park responded with a rebound basket by Nielson. The Stags stretched their lead to 47-42 on a basket and two free throws by Miller in a span of 23 seconds.
Folkins’ three-point play ended the scoring for the Eagles and set up the Stags’ final-minute heroics.
Deer Park will entertain East Valley 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
