The Deer Park boys basketball team got five points from Blake Starbuck in the final 2 minutes to edge the Cheney Blackhawks 54-52 on Tuesday.
Starbuck tied the game at 50-50 with a short jumper and gave the Stags a 51-50 lead with a free throw with 1:02 remaining. The Blackhawks took their final lead on a basket by John Gingrich only to see Starbuck help the Stags regain the lead a 53-52 with two more free throws.
Uconn Peoneâ€™s free throw with 13 seconds left gave Deer Park the final margin of victory.
â€śTheyâ€™re starting to play together,â€ť said Stag head coach Ken Ryan.
Neither team could establish a large lead during the game.
Deer Parkâ€™s biggest advantage was 20-13 in the second quarter following a six-point explosion by Reese Ferguson. Cheneyâ€™s largest lead was 35-30 midway through the third quarter.
A five-point surge by Peone at the end third quarter tied the game at 40-40 with 8 minutes remaining.
Both teams traded the lead in the final quarter, leading up to Starbuckâ€™s last-minute offensive heroics.
The win improved the Stagsâ€™ Great Northern League record to 2-4, 6-8 overall. Cheney fell to 2-4,7-7.
Starbuck led all scorers with 17 points while Austin Harding paced the Blackhawks with 12 points.
