Stags earn first state cross country trophy

November 8, 2011

Deer Park's Dayde Collins

The Deer Park boys cross country team ended its most successful season in historic proportions.
The Stags, ranked in the bottom half of the top 10 state rankings for the entire season, proved the pollsters wrong at the Class 2A state cross country championships on Saturday at the Twin Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Deer Park finished the race in third place, the first time the program has ever earned a place on the awards stand reserved for the top four team placers. The Stags’ 148 points trailed only eventual champion Lindberg (112 points) and Sehome (113) in the team standings.
The team performance was not the only historic performance in school history.
Senior Dayde Collins placed third with a 15-minute, 43-second performance, the best finish ever by a DPHS runner.
Steve Schwab in 1975 and Collins last year were the top finish by a DPHS runner before last year.
Junior Daniel Amann, the District VII champion, placed sixth last week with 15:45 effort.
Other Stag finishers last weekend were Nolan Woodard (25th, 16:31), Kody Turner (68th, 17:09), Seth Nelson (93rd, 17:26), Sam Davis (118th, 17:43) and Logan Boswell (121st, 17:49).
