Updated July 22:
A Chattaroy couple were killed following a mobile home explosion and fire on Wednesday evening.
Investigators continue to center their investigation on the fire being deliberately set as part of a domestic dispute.
Mike Asselin, 51, who passed away on Friday, and his wife, Sheila, had been separated for the past couple of months. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Asselin had disconnected one of the mobile home gas tanks and then set a match to the escaping gas.
According to Spokane County Fire District No. 4 Division Chief Howard Johnson, a firefighter at Station 42 in Chattaroy heard an explosion at around 5:30 p.m., followed by a column of black smoke and flames from a mobile home unit at Chattaroy Valley Estates. The mobile home park is directly across East Chattaroy Road from the fire station.
Johnson said the mobile home had suffered “extensive damage” by the time he arrived at the scene, 5 minutes after the initial call.
First responders found the victims laying outside the structure. Johnson said the pair seemed to have burns over large portions of their bodies.
The couple were treated on the scene and then helicoptered to Spokane.
Mike Asselin was later flown to Harborview Medical Center and died two days later. Sheila Asselin, who was also transported to Harborview, died on Monday.
Units from six fire district stations along with Deer Park Ambulance were called to the scene. Fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby mobile homes, but a couple of cars and two wooden storage buildings were damaged.
