The Riverside volleyball team ran its Northeast A League and overall record to 3-1 with a convincing 25-16, 25-14, 25-21 home win over Newport on Thursday.
The Lady Rams showed off a balanced attack with Sydney Spray, Kyra Phillips-Winkler, Holly Nelson and Hayley Pace all contributed five kills in the win. Phillips-Warner anchored the defensive effort with two blocks.
Having taken the first game, the Lady Rams took control of the second one by rattling off six straight points to take a 12-7 lead. The surge was highlighted by one of Phillips-Winklerâ€™s blocks.
A Spray kill boosted Riversideâ€™s lead to 14-8 before the Lady Grizzlies staged a small comeback, led by a kill from Haley Braim and an ace from Jensen Kirkwood, to cut the lead to 14-11.
Riverside regrouped and closed the game with an 11-3 run.
Newport took an early lead in the final game before Riverside charged back. An ace by Daisy Drees tied the game at 12-12. The Lady Rams then ran off five straight points, keyed by kills from Samantha Oâ€™Hare and Phillips-Winkler.
Trailing 19-14, the Lady Grizzlies staged a final rally, led by kills from Lauren Vaughn and Hadley Stratton, before the Lady Rams scored the final two points to close out the match.
