Richard D. Brauner, 89

August 7, 2011

An informal celebration of life will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 13 at 4109 Maple Street at Loon Lake for area resident Richard “Dick” D. Brauner, 89, who died on July 15 at the home of his daughter Ronna (Eddie) Jimenez in Palm Desert, Calif., from complications of pneumonia, COPD and heart disease.
Born on July 9, 1922, as the third child to Ruth (Ricketts) and Carl Brauner in Colville, he resided in the summer at Loon Lake, and wintered at Desert Hot Springs, Calif. with his wife of 66 years, Maxine.
He grew up in Marcus, graduating in 1940.
Mr. Brauner served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS LST 307 in the European Theater as a motor machinist’s mate first class. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism during an engagement in which he helped to secure the ship and fellow sailors under enemy fire.
During one leave from his naval duties, he met Maxine Meyer of Chewelah. They were married and his new bride soon traveled to be with him in San Diego.
The couple later bought a sawmill from his dad, with his younger brother, Bill. Mr. Brauner ran the logging operation, and his family spent most of their early years growing up in the forests and mountains, along the creeks, rivers and lakes of Eastern Washington.
Later, he designed, built and sold houses.
Mr. Brauner enjoyed working on myriad projects (a “Jack of all trades”), playing golf and slot machines, and growing orange and lemon trees.
Proud of his service, he became involved in the local Legionnaire’s club and helped with the annual Kettle Falls’ Fourth of July celebrations.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine and Shirley; and a brother, Elmo.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine; five children: Gayle of Woodland, Wash., Richard K, of Spokane, Rodney of Kettle Falls, Dan of Colville and Ronna Jimenez, of Palm Desert; two brothers, Lloyd and Bill; and six grandchildren.
Mr. Brauner was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the Kettle Falls area.
Contact Rod Brauner at 509-738-4447 or Ronna Jimenez at 760-219-7898 for more details of the celebration of life service.
