Police shooting suspect takes own life in Deer Park

June 19, 2012

Dozens of police officers descended upon Deer Park after a suspect in a Spokane police shooting took his own life following a high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 2 and Deer Park-Milan Road.

Details remain sketchy surrounding a high-speed chase that began in north Spokane on Tuesday afternoon and ended with a fatal accident in Deer Park less than an 90 minutes later.
The suspect, originally identified as Charles Wallace by KXLY-TV, shot two Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies during a routine traffic stop at Elm Street and U.S. Highway 2 at around 4 p.m.
In a media briefing, Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said one of the deputies needed surgery. He later said both deputies were in stable condition
The suspect then fled the scene in an SUV before carjacking a Honda sedan. He then fled north on U.S. 2 traveling, according to some accounts, in excess of 80 mph.
The pursuit included police officers from various jurisdictions in the Spokane area along with the Washington State Patrol and FBI. A helicopter belonging to the Sheriff’s Department also helped track Wallace’s whereabouts.
The suspect headed west of Deer Park-Milan Road before he crashed the Honda into a guardrail at the Crawford Avenue-U.S. Highway 395 intersection at around 5:30 p.m..
It is believed that Wallace fatally shot himself shortly after the accident.
WSP Trooper Joe Liebrecht said police officers had set up a spike strip at Crawford and U.S. 395 and had other measures ready to ensure that the pursuit would end once the suspect reached the intersection.
Liebrecht could not confirm reports that Wallace fired shots at the pursuing police officers while traveling on Deer Park-Milan Road. Police officers looked for evidence surrounding various aspects of the car chase at the Weber Road roundabout.
Police are also looking at what possible involvement two males and a female, all unnamed, had with the initial traffic stop and Wallace’s ability to flee the scene.
