Plenty of Fourth of July festivities on tap

June 28, 2011

Deer Park’s traditional Fourth of July celebration will expand this year with an old-fashioned community picnic planned by Zion Lutheran Church from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday at Mix Park.
The new event will include a kiddies parade at 10 a.m. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3067 in Deer Park will take part in the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m.
The picnic will also feature live bands, kids games, a talent show and quilt show.
Following the picnic, the sixth annual “As American As Apple Pie” concert will start at 7 p.m. at the Deer Park First Baptist Church, E1200 Crawford Ave.’
The event, featuring the Deer Park Community Orchestra and Choir, will provide an overview of American music from 1750-1950. Songs include “Yankee Doodle,” “God Bless America” and “Grand Old Flag.” There will also be armed forces and sacrificial love medleys.
The concert also offers free apple pie and ice cream.
Concertgoers need to bring their own chairs because of the lack of seating at the concert venue, the church parking lot.
The Fourth of July celebration will conclude with the fireworks display, sponsored by the city of Deer Park, at dusk (approximately 10 p.m.) at the high school football field.
