Paul Emil Schaffner, 76, passed away on Nov. 20, 2012, in Spokane after a brief illness.
Paul was born in Chewelah on March 18, 1936, to Urban and Cora Schaffner of Ford. He grew up in a family of four children, being the youngest.
Charles the oldest passed away in 2007. Howard of Harrington, Wash., and Ruth Sjoberg Schaffner of Walnut Creek, Calif., are the remaining siblings.
Paul graduated from Springdale High School in 1954. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served for three years. After completing his military service, he went to Eastern Washington College at Cheney, obtaining a teaching certificate while graduating with honors in 1961.
He taught for one year at Springdale High School and from there did postgraduate studies at Kent State University in Ohio and at the University of Freiburg (Germany), where he earned his master’s degree.
Paul taught at Mead High School for 28 years prior to his retirement.
Paul lived on the family homestead farm at Ford until his untimely death.
Paul leaves behind three nephews, three nieces, one grandnephew and three grandnieces.
Services were held on Nov. 26, 2012, at the Springdale Community Church with burial following at the Ford Cemetery.
