Newport's second half run carries them past Riverside

January 30, 2012

Riverside's Jamie Hardy has her way to be basket blocked by Newport's Jolie Fredrick during second half action on Saturday.

The Newport girls basketball team awoke its sleeping offense to pull away from the Riverside Lady Rams 57-35 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Lady Grizzlies, who trailed 19-14 midway through the second quarter, went on an 11-3 run to open the third quarter to break the game open.
Sparking the Newport run was junior guard Courtney Weise, who buried a pair of 3-pointers. Her second long-range shot gave Newport a 36-22 lead.
Weise would later earn an old fashioned 3-point play to extend the Lady Grizzlies’ advantage to 45-24 going into the fourth quarter.
Courtney Davis, the Lady Rams leading scorer, sparked her team’s second quarter run with seven straight points.
Davis finished with a team-high 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Miranda Fredrick led the Lady Grizzlies with 18 points.
Riverside (2-8 in the Northeast A League) opens the District VII tournament on Saturday against Lakeside (5-5).
