Monroe Road to receive more safety improvements

October 30, 2012

The Spokane County Engineer’s Office and the Spokane County Target Zero Task Force has received funding from Washington Traffic Safety Commission for the Monroe Road safety project.
The primary goal of the safety project is to reduce the traffic collisions on an 11-mile-stretch of Monroe Road, which has a posted speed limit of 45 mph.
Five fatalities and 18 serious injury collisions occurred on Monroe Road in the past four years. Speed is the major contributing factor. The grant funding will allow the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office to provide extra emphasis patrols in the designated project area for the next year.
Federal-funded road safety improvements were just completed in the project area by the Spokane County Engineer’s Office. The improvements consisted of increased and enhanced signage with higher retro-reflective sheeting, at and through curves, and edge line striping. Roadside safety was also enhanced by flattening slopes, removing hazards within the clear zone and the installation of guardrails.
Signs are being placed in several locations within the project area with the “Slow Down and Stay Safe” safety message.
