Miriam K. Christiansen, 92

October 12, 2012

It is in celebration, mourning and love that we remember our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Miriam Kathleen “Katie” Christiansen. At 92 years old, Katie peacefully returned to the arms of her lord, husband and parents on Oct. 6, 2012.
Katie was born to Edward and Harriet Wolf at the family home near Tekoa, Wash., on July 30, 1920. She grew up in Deer Park and lived there for the rest of her life.
As a young girl, she enjoyed sports, even winning top honors at the state level for her role as the point guard on the team. She went on to graduate in the Deer Park High School Class of 1938.
Following graduation, Katie was an active member of the Deer Park community, sharing her wisdom and kind heart with everybody she met.
She fell in love and married Carl H. Christiansen in 1957. They spent years working hand-in-hand for the city of Deer Park, him as the maintenance supervisor and her as the city treasurer for 32 years.
She was also an incredibly involved Methodist, helping to build the Deer Park United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and attending church every Sunday. Her faith and integrity in the Lord guided her throughout her life.
After retirement, she enjoyed many years of traveling with her husband throughout the United States. When not traveling, she enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She always welcomed her home and her arms to her many nieces and nephews.
Katie spent her final seven years with her niece Linda Clarkson in Deer Park with whom she shared a special bond. Her final month was spent at Willow Grove Care Facility. The family gives endless appreciation to the wonderful caregivers there as well as Horizon Hospice for their kindness and making Katie’s final months comfortable.
She is preceded in death by her dear husband, Carl H. Christiansen, and survived by her sister, Mary Zimmerer, as wellas numerous nieces, great-nieces, great-great-nieces and nephews.
Katie was endlessly generous, open-hearted and was always willing to help others without hesitation. All who had the pleasure to know her were better people for having met her and she will be deeply missed by so many.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at the Deer Park United Methodist Church, with Pastor Susan Robinson officiating, followed with interment in the Woodland Cemetery, Deer Park.
Memorial contributions may be made in Katie’s name to the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 368, Deer Park, WA 99006 or the Union Gospel Mission,
