Lady Stags win playoff opener

May 16, 2014

Deer Park shortstop Siera English takes a cut at a pitch during the Lady Stags' playoff opener on Thursday.

The Deer Park softball team, led by an 8-run second inning, advanced into the double-elimination round of the District VII tournament with an easy 11-1 win over the Pullman Greyhounds on Thursday.
The Lady Stags, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, found themselves trailing 1-0 as the Greyhounds took advantage of some early wildness by Deer Park pitcher Kylie Sweeney. Deer Park quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Siera English.
Deer Park, which took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Kelli Hughes, blew the game wide open on a three-run home by English over the left-centerfield fence.
The Lady Stags added two more runs in the fourth inning to force the 10-run rule after five innings of play.
Deer Park, one of four teams left in the tournament, travels to No. 2 seed East Valley for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. The top two teams travel to Class 2A state tournament on May 30-31 in Selah.
