The Deer Park girls basketball team unleashed a strong defense and uncanny free throw shooting to defeat rival Riverside 62-48 on Dec. 13.
The Lady Stags rushed out to a 13-4 lead in the opening quarter, thanks, in part, to Tessa Heins work on the free throw line. The senior guard hit 9 of 10 free throws in the first eight minutes of the game.
The Lady Rams were held to one basket, a short jumper by Marisa Pace, in the games first 10 minutes. Riverside’s leading scorer, Courtney Davis, hampered by early foul trouble, cut the Deer Park lead to 16-6 early in the second quarter. The Lady Stags responded with a 10-2 run, fueled by a basket and three-pointer from Danielle Beltrame.
Deer Park blew the game wide open in the third quarter. A pair of steals by Alison Ruygrok led to four quick points boosted the Lady Stag lead to 53-31 late in the quarter.

Deer Park head coach Kevin Oglesbee was especially pleased by Heins’ defensive effort on Davis.
“We challenged her,” he said. “She took that as a leadership role.
Heins finished with a game high 25 points, including 14 of 16 from the free throw line. Beltrame added 14 points and Ruygrok finished with 10.
Deer Park finished 22-26 from the charity stripe as a team
Davis, who was held to 2 points in the first half, finished with 14 points.
