Lady Stags clinch playoff berth with West Valley sweep

October 23, 2013

Deer Park's Emily Metlow tries to squeeze her kill attempt between West Valley's Erin HIgbie (12) and Jordyn Rauer during Tuesday's action.

The Deer Park volleyball team clinched a District VII tournament berth with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-19 win over West Valley on Tuesday.
The win boosted the Lady Stags’ Great Northern League record to 3-7 and eliminated the winless Eagles from any postseason action.
“They gave us a real good match,” said Deer Park head coach Jack Wood on the Eagles’ effort.
The teams traded points early in game one before the Lady Stags rattled off five straight points behind the serving of Kailiegh McGuire to take an 8-4 lead. Deer Park put an exclamation point on the game with some late kills by Siera English and Emily Metlow.
The Lady Stags wasted little time building a 6-0 lead in game two. The Eagles, behind an ace from Gia Mauro and a block Jordyn Rauer, trimmed the lead to 11-9.
Deer Park, however, had an answer for every Eagle the rally the rest of the way. The Lady Stags punctuated the win with a late game kill by Janae Nelson.
It was the Eagles who surged ahead early in game three only to have English change momentum almost single-handily. The Lady Stags blasted five straight kills to give Deer Park a 16-14 lead.
A kill and block by West Valley’s Jaija Williams tied the game at 19-19 before the Lady Stags ran off the last six points with help from a McGuire ace and English’s 23rd kill of the match.
Wood said he told English before the season that there would be times her teammates would need her to carry them through some tough matches.
English told him that she would be ready.
“She’s ready for this and then some,” Wood added.
The Lady Stags travel to East Valley for a match on Thursday and finish their regular season at home against Cheney on Oct. 29.
