Lady Rams need extra time to defeat Newport

Riverside's Brielle Supanchick chases down Newport's Holly Malsbury during second half action on Friday.

The Riverside girls basketball team, which hit clutch free throws at the end of regulation and the first overtime, finally pulled away from Newport in the second extra session.
The Lady Rams outscored the visitors 10-5 in the second overtime to come away with a 51-46 win.
The win improved Riverside’s Northeast A League record to 5-5 and kept alive their chances for the No. 3 seed in the upcoming District VII tournament.
The Lady Rams led 21-11 at halftime only to see the Lady Grizzlies (6-5) slowly cut into the lead in the third quarter.
A basket by Newport’s Holly Malbury trimmed the Riverside lead to 27-26 with a minute to go in the third session.
Malsbury scored in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to give the Lady Grizzlies a 28-27 lead. Courtney Davis answered for the Lady Rams only to have Malbury hit another bucket.
A Brielle Supanchick three-pointer gave Riverside a 33-30 lead with 4:26 remaining.
A three-pointer by Courtney Wiese tied the game at 35-35. Wiese hit a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left to give Newport a 37-35.
Riverside’s Marisa Pace answered with two free throws with 21 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The Lady Grizzlies grabbed the lead at 40-37 when Wiese hit another long-range jumper. Her free throw with 38 seconds left gave Newport a 41-39 lead.
Natalie Workman hit a pair of free throws a few seconds later for the Lady Rams to force a second overtime.
Riverside opened up the second overtime with a Davis basket and slowly increased the lead on a pair of baskets and two free throws by Miranda LaJiness.
Davis led the Lady Rams with 16 points while Wiese and Malsbury combined for 31 points to lead the Lady Grizzlies.
