John Schuler Sr., 78

Mr. John Schuler, age 78, died at Spokane Hospice House in Spokane on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. The cause of death was a long-term battle with Parkinson’s Disease. John was born to become a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Born Feb. 21, 1933, in Colville, his family moved to the Spokane area the next year where he lived until 1970. John then resided in the Deer Park, Clayton and Loon Lake communities.
John was a 1952 graduate of John Rogers High School and a track team athlete.
He met his high school sweetheart, Leona Sargent, there and they were married in 1952. They settled in Spokane where John worked for 18 years for Kaiser Aluminum. John and Leona were married for 25 years and had nine children.
John was also a member of the infamous “Drag Racers” that regularly raced up Division Street when it was still a dirt road! John told the story of racing his brother, Lee, up Division Street to see who had the faster car when they were pulled over by the police. When the officers asked the two boys what they were doing, they replied that they were trying to see who had the faster car.
The policemen decided they wanted to know, also, so they escorted both boys out to the Interstate racetrack so they could all find out! (The winner of that race is still a little fuzzy depending on which brother you talk to.)
John was self-employed the last 42 years of his life as a logger. He will be remembered for being honest and always giving a fair value to families for their timber and doing a thorough clean-up.
After joining the Church, God bestowed upon John a giving heart and he was well known for donating his time and heavy equipment to his Church and many families within the area.
He will be remembered by the Loon Lake community for donating countless hours during construction of the new elementary school and the child care center.
John joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Deer Park in 1976 and was a faithful member for 36 years, serving in many positions. He was honored to obtain the position of the Melchizedek Priesthood. John was well known for faithful attendance and constant ministering of the ways of his church to all he came in contact with.
John is survived by his first wife, Leona; and their nine children: Leona (Russ) Adams, Evelyn (Brad) Hodges, John L., Lorrie (Peter) Dunham, Jake (Terri), Jody (Maggie), Jeff (Julie), Jym (Pam) and Mike; 28 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lee Tracy and Fred Tracy; and one sister, Carol Keyes.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at the Riverside Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chattaroy. A family graveside service followed at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery where John was interred.
The family expresses appreciation to hospice of Spokane for their kind services during John’s last days.
