Groundhogs send mixed messages

February 2, 2012

If you believe Punxsutawney Phil, keep those snow shovels handy. If you’re Deer Park’s groundhog (if Deer Park had one), spring is just around the corner.
Earlier today, Phil, who seems to be the country’s preeminent groundhog, saw his shadow, meaning six more weeks of winter.
Yet, in cloudy Deer Park (3,000 miles from Phil’s home) any groundhog would have a hard time seeing his shadow, meaning an early spring.
And if we need a tie-breaker, Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia agrees with the Deer Park forecast.
