Freeman spikers sweep Riverside

October 4, 2012

Riverside's Kyra Phillips tries to sneak the ball between Freeman's Dani Reilly (4) and Josie Schultz.

The Freeman Scotties, staking claim as the top volleyball team in the Northeast A League, took care of the Riverside Lady Rams 25-10, 25-20, 25-18 on Thursday.
The Scotties, behind three kills from Kaela Straw, opened up a 10-1 lead in the first game.
Riverside (5-4 in NE-A play) made a brief run with three straight points behind the serving of Courtney Davis. Freeman, (7-1) however, responded with six straight points to stretch the Scottie lead to 16-5.
Two aces by Straw gave the Scotties a 20-7 lead and were never threatened the rest of the game.
Riverside regrouped in the second game and took a 12-11 lead on a Davis kill. A Sydney Spray kill gave the Lady Rams a 14-12 lead before Freeman made another charge.
A Kyra Phillips kill trimmed the Freeman lead to 22-19 only to see the Scotties go back to Straw to put the game away.
The Scotties wasted little time going for the sweep, opening a 10-1 lead following a kill by Katie Vold.
Straw put together a kill and an ace to increase the Freeman lead to 12-3.
A Phillips’ kill trimmed the Scottie lead to 13-6. Freeman’s Dani Reilly responded with a kill. Another Straw kill gave the Scotties a 20-11.
The final Riverside hurrah was kills by Spray and Phillips before the Scotties put an end to the match.
Straw took game-high honors with 14 kills. Davis and Phillips led the Lady Rams with five kills apiece. Davis and Straw shared game honors with three aces apiece.
