Enrollment keeps Deer Park and Riverside in current athletic conferences

Deer Park and Riverside will not be going anywhere when it comes to Washington Interscholastic Activities Association sports classifications for the 2012-13 school year.
In a WIAA meeting in Renton last week to look at preliminary classifications for the upcoming two school years, Deer Park will remain a Class 2A (Great Northern League) school will Riverside will remain in the Class 1A (Northeast A League) ranks.
WIAA board member and DPHS Principal Joe Feist told the DP School Board that the high school’s enrollment in grades 10-12 over the past year was 643 students. The count included DPHS, alternative and Home-Link students.
When eliminating the students who did not live in the school district, the number shrunk to 580 students, still well above the 513 student enrollment cutoff between 1A and 2A schools.
The enrollment figures for Riverside were not immediately known, but they fell comfortably under the 513-student cutoff.
Feist added that Colville will join the Great Northern League due to its thriving alternative high school.
Medical Lake, which was unsuccessful in petitioning to join the NE-A two years ago, will have no trouble dropping to the lower level since its grade 10-12 enrollment has fallen below 513.
The WIAA is expected to ratify all school classifications at a meeting in January.
