A 24-year-old Elk woman faces first-degree arson charges following a house fire in the N37000 block of Elk-Chattaroy Road on March 27.
Spokane County Fire District No. 4 and Spokane County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at around 1:30 p.m. to a suspicious fire at Elk-Chattaroy Road. Fire personnel had responded to the same residence the previous day to a suspicious mattress fire.
While en route to the residence, Deputy Jennifer Sutter received information that 24-year-old Amanda Cook possibly started the fire intentionally.
Sutter located Cook walking towards the burning residence. She questioned Cook, according to the sheriff’s department press release, who told the deputy she was not happy with her living arrangements, intentionally started the fire and would rather be in jail.
The press release also stated that Cook continued to tell Sutter that she soaked a towel in gasoline, lit the towel on fire in the garage then took her dog to a neighbor's house. She also admitted she had set the mattress on fire at the residence the previous day.
Cook was subsequently arrested on the first-degree arson charge.
