Elderly woman killed in Stevens County car crash

March 6, 2013

An elderly woman was killed and her husband was taken to a local hospital following a two-car, head-on accident at Swenson and Woolard roads in southern Stevens County on Tuesday night.
According to the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, 17-year-old Justin Price tried to avoid hitting a disabled vehicle on the side of Swenson Road at around 7:30 p.m. and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting the couple's vehicle.
Gary L. Flyckt, 73, who was driving the car, was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center with unknown injuries. His wife, Jonia Flyckt, 72, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.
Price was released to his parents. Charges are pending against Price, according to a KREM-TV report.
Emergency crews from Stevens County Fire District No. 1 said the way that the road is built with its steep shoulders makes it hard for a disabled vehicle not to take a portion of the main roadway.
