Eagle Scout project leads to new DPMS goalposts

August 24, 2013

Members of Boy Scout Troop 28 show off the pads that will decorate the newly installed goalposts at the Deer Park Middle School football field.

The Deer Park Middle School football field moved into the 21st century with the help of Wade Lundgren and fellow Troop 28 Boy Scouts.
The 14-year-old Lundgren wanted to place an outdoor volleyball court at the middle school for his Eagle Scout project but switched to replacing the goalposts at the football field.
The DPMS eighth grader said the current galvanized pipe goalposts, probably placed in the early 1980s, “needed some help.”
Lundgren began his project by soliciting community donations to purchase new goalposts.
The scout finally selected a set of steel-aluminum yellow goalposts from Alumagoal Athletic at a cost of about $5,000.
The new goalposts will be the common “T-shaped” model found on most football fields. The old DPMS goalposts were “H-shaped” models that have been phased out over the past couple of decades for safety reasons.
The Boy Scouts began the manual labor part of the project on Thursday by removing the old goalposts and the sunken concrete slabs that help them in place. The scouts then dug a pair of 5-foot holes to anchor the goalposts with another cement slab.
The following day was spent assembling the new goalposts and putting them in place with the help of Lundgren’s father, Mark, and school district maintenance workers.
The project also received help from various businesses that supplied building materials and cash donations.
The final part of the project was blue pads for the actual posts as a player protective measure. One of the pads sported “DPMS” lettering while the other spelled out “SPIKES.”
