DP School Board adopts 2012-13 budget

August 28, 2012

In one of the final items to consider before the start of the new school year, the Deer Park School Board approved the 2012-13 budget on Monday.
The $25.5 million budget is very similar to the one adopted by the school board last year.
Last year’s budget was based on an enrollment of 2,356 full-time equivalent students. This year’s estimate is 2,263 FTE students. The district finished last year with 2,276 FTE students.
Shauna Ferguson, the school district’s business manager, told the school board that preliminary enrollment projections show a greater-than-expected number of kindergartners and third graders. The surge will mean the hiring of an extra teacher at Deer Park and Arcadia Elementary schools.
The 2012-13 budget $425,000 in the transportation vehicle fund as compared to $200,000 last year. The extra funds will be used to pay for two new school buses later this year.
The school district also has $850,000 in the capital projects fund. School district officials are looking at replacing the restrooms/concession stand at the high school football field as well as replacing the tennis courts at the middle school. It is not known whether either project will be undertaken this school year.
