City's sales tax revenues slide during 2011's second quarter

October 11, 2011

Deer Park’s taxable retail sales continue to take a sharp dip, according to statistics supplied by the Department of Revenue.
According to Department of Revenue statistics, Deer Park generated $16 million in retail sales from April-June 2011 as compared to $18.2 million for the same period in 2010, an 11.9 percent drop.
Deer Park’s recent downspin followed a 32 percent drop in the second quarter of 2010 as compared to the second quarter of 2009.
Springdale’s retail sales dropped 26.7 percent from $717,452 to $525,420.
Spokane County recorded a 6.8 percent increase ($242.2 million to $258.7 million) while Stevens County showed a .9 percent drop ($26.2 million to $26.4 million). Statewide, taxable retail sales rose by 2.9 percent to $25.6 billion in this year’s second quarter.
State officials blamed a slow construction market for the weakness in retail sales.
Deer Park taxable retail trade, a subset of retail sales that does not include services and construction, fell by 5.9 percent in the second quarter of 2011 ($8.9 million to $8.4 million).
The drop in sales also meant a drop in the share of funds the city receives in sales tax revenue.
The city received $130,373 in the second quarter of 2011 compared to $148,759 in the second quarter of 2010. The city received $370,125 in the second quarter in 2009 and $269,485 in 2008.
City Clerk-Treasurer Deby Cragun said city officials are not too concerned with the revenue loss since the 2011 budget includes low estimates in sales tax funds.
Springdale’s retail trade decreased by 15.2 percent (from $414,804 to $351,720) during 2010’s second quarter. Spokane County’s rose 12.5 percent ($80.3 million to $90.3) and Stevens County’s jumped 3.9 percent ($8.5 million to $8.8 million). The statewide increase was 3.7 percent.
