The Deer Park City Council has begun the first steps in installing a surveillance camera at Swinyard Park.
The council agreed to purchase $9,400 in remote camera equipment for the park and a central control system in city hall from WOW, a wireless company in Spokane.
The city has set aside $21,700 for video surveillance equipment in this year’s budget. The equipment is designed to control crime problems in the park and as a safety measure at city hall.
Director of Community Services Roger Krieger expects the surveillance equipment to be operational by this spring.
The Swinyard Park camera will be located on a 30-foot-high pole near the skate park. The camera, which records at 360 degrees, will be able to show activity in all areas of the park.
Krieger said the system can store up to 1 terabyte (300 hours) of video information.
City officials and law enforcement agencies will be able to access video from Smartphones or Sheriff’s Department computers.
The system also has the capability of installing five more cameras (two in the city hall offices) in other parts of the city.
