City gearing up for Main Street construction

August 5, 2013

City officials expect construction on the first section of south Main Street could begin within the next week.
Director of Community Services Roger Krieger said a pre-construction meeting with Cargile Construction will be held early next week and he would be surprised if the actual work did not begin by early next week.
The project will rebuild Main Street from the U.S. Highway 395 entrance to Crawford Avenue.
The first section from the highway to the “H” Street roundabout will be done this year with the rest of the street work planned for 2014.
The entire project will include a new roadbed, stormwater drainage and sidewalks and curbing on both sides of the street.
The first section must be completed by mid-October. Krieger is confident the Cargile can meet the deadline since there is no water or sewer main work in that section.
New water mains are planned for the section of Main Street north of the roundabout.
Krieger said the biggest obstacle in this year’s work will be traffic, which may to find inventive ways to get to businesses near the highway entrance.
