Chewelah buries DP girls with second half surge

December 11, 2013

Deer Park's Taylor Varang tries to ignore the defensive pressure applied by Chewelah's Kara Fredrick during Tuesday's game at DPHS.

The Chewelah girls basketball team used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to surge past the Deer Park Lady Stags 47-20 on Tuesday.
Leading 18-15 at halftime, the Lady Cougars (1-2) used their strength underneath the basket to pull away from the Lady Stags (0-3), who were held to only one field goal in the third quarter, an offensive rebound by Siera English with 40 seconds left in the quarter.
Kara Fredrick, who finished with a game-high 14 points, keyed Chewelah's second half explosion with her outside shooting. Fredrick's third 3-pointer of the game gave the Lady Cougars a 29-15 lead midway through the third quarter. Shayla Hartill's offensive rebound bucket a few seconds later boosted the Chewelah lead to 31-15.
Deer Park managed only one basket in the fourth quarter. Again, it was English who supplied the offense with a layup with 2 minutes to play.
English, making her varsity debut this season, finished with a team-high 8 points.
Deer Park will try to get into the win column for the first time this season when the Lady Stags entertain Lakeside at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
