Candidates begin sign-up for fall elections

The 2011 election season began in earnest on Monday, the start of the week-long candidate filing period for various local and state elections.
Leading the filings on Monday was former Deer Park City Councilwoman Dee Cragun, who filed for the city council seat currently y held by Randy Bean. Cragun, who continues to attend city council meetings, was the only city resident to file for a council seat on Monday.
Incumbent Jeff Whittle was the only Deer Park School Board candidate to file on the first day.
Other incumbents to file on Monday were Spokane County Fire District No. 4 Commissioners Roger Krieger and Jack Hensley.
Finally, Mike Padden was the first candidate to file for the 4th District State Senate seat. The election is to fill the one-year remaining on the term of Mike McCaslin, who passed away late last year.
