Blackhawks stifle Lady Stag attack

January 18, 2012

Deer Park's Kimmie Brazington battles for a loose ball during first quarter action on Tuesday.

The Cheney Blackhawks unleashed a combination of an aggressive man-to-man defense and dominant post play to defeat the Deer Park girls basketball team 47-27 on Tuesday.
The Cheney defense stymied the Deer Park offense for most of the game. The Lady Stags never led in the game as the Blackhawks jumped out to an early 12-4 lead.
Cheney’s 5-foot-11 forward Allie Brown keyed the early surge by hitting her first four shots.
Deer Park (4-2, 8-6) cut the Cheney (3-3, 7-7) lead to 15-13 on an Alisha Perez basket early in the second quarter only to see Blackhawk reserve center, 6-foot Mandy McDowall, hit two baskets to push the Cheney lead to 21-13 at halftime.
Deer Park’s last offensive surge occurred midway through the third quarter when Drew Petroske hit a three-pointer and Tessa Heins followed with a short jumper to trim the Cheney lead to 25-24.
The Blackhawks responded with a 7-0 run to close out the third quarter and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.
Brown led all scorers with 16 points while McDowall added another 12 points. Kimmie Brazington led the Lady Stags with seven points.
