Beck, McCart survive primary election challenge

August 9, 2012

Republican Stevens County Commissioner candidates Mark Beck and Wes McCart were the survivors from the Aug. 7 primary election and will now face off in the Nov. 3 general election.
Beck, a former Stevens County Fire District No. 1 fire chief, was the top vote-getter in the District 1 county commissioner race with 554 votes. McCart, a rancher, finished second with 533 votes. Another Republican, Tom Hale, placed third with 420 votes and will not advance to the general election.
In the other county commissioner race, incumbent Malcolm Friedman out-polled fellow Republican Steve Parker 1,153-811 in what amounts to a dress rehearsal for the general election.
In the only other Stevens County primary election race, Dwight Morgan (737) and Emil Rosenberg (635) were the top two vote-getters in the Public Utility District No. 1 commissioner race. Lloyd Henry placed third with 445 votes.
In the lone contested primary election in Spokane County, Democrat Daryl Romeyn out-polled runner-up Shelly O’Quinn, a Republican 12,384-10,868. Republican Rob Chase, the other candidate, finished with 7,281 votes.
In the other county commissioner race, Republican Todd Mielke slid past Democrat John Roskelley 17,299-13,233. The pair will meet again in the general election.
