Balanced attack carries Lady Stags to season opening win

December 2, 2011

The Deer Park girls basketball team, paced by four players in double figures, easily dispatched the Chewelah Cougars 61-32 on Thursday in the season opener for both schools.
The Lady Stags wasted little time taking control of the game, building a 10-2 lead in the first couple of minutes. The margin grew to 28-8 midway through the second quarter on Alison Ruygrok’s second three-pointer of the game. A Kimmie Brazington put-back gave the Lady Stags a 44-18 lead just before halftime.

Ellensburg slows down Stags in playoff opener

November 13, 2011

The Ellensburg Bulldogs did something on Saturday that no other team was able to do this fall: slow down the Deer Park Stag offense.
The Stags, who averaged 36.6 points per game during the regular season, were held to fourth quarter touchdown in the opening round of the state Class 2A playoffs on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (9-3) , who defeated Cheney 36-35 in overtime in a play-in game on Nov. 8, will now move on to play Prosser following the 21-7 win. The Stags finished their most successful campaign in school history with a 9-2 record.

Ellensburg used the quarterbacking duo of Garrett Hull and Matt Bennett against the Blackhawks. Tailback J. Foley, who rushed for 79 yards against Cheney, handled most of the ground game duties.
For the Stags (9-1) it will be their first state playoff game at home since they hosted Cashmere in 2000.

Stags earn first state cross country trophy

November 8, 2011

The Deer Park boys cross country team ended its most successful season in historic proportions.
The Stags, ranked in the bottom half of the top 10 state rankings for the entire season, proved the pollsters wrong at the Class 2A state cross country championships on Saturday at the Twin Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Deer Park finished the race in third place, the first time the program has ever earned a place on the awards stand reserved for the top four team placers. The Stags’ 148 points trailed only eventual champion Lindberg (112 points) and Sehome (113) in the team standings.

Waiting game pays off for Stags

November 4, 2011

What is fast becoming a school tradition, Deer Park football coaches spent the final game of the regular season with one eye on the scoreboard and the other on their cellphones.
For the past two years, the Stags, assured of a playoff spot, spent the final weekend of the regular season worried about postseason seeding at the same time they were playing a non-league game against Medical Lake.

Riverside gears up for rematch with Chelan

November 3, 2011

For the second straight year, the Riverside Rams will open the Class 1A football playoffs against the Chelan Goats.

Chelan, coming off a 60-0 win over Cascade in its regular season finale, is led Michael Amsel, who has completed 42 of 69 passes for 873 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Stag playoff fate to be determined Thursday

November 2, 2011

The Deer Park football team’s playoff future will be determined on Thursday at West Valley.
The Stags, who finished their Great Northern League season two weeks ago with a 4-1 record, finish their season with a non-league game at Medical Lake 7 p.m. on Thursday. They, however, must wait to see who wins the Cheney-West Valley match-up on Thursday to see who they will play in the opening round of the playoffs.

Rams have no answer for unstoppable Stags

November 1, 2011

The Deer Park football team had to rewrite its record book following a convincing 44-13 non-league win over Riverside on Friday.
The Stags, who saw Zach Mohr kick a school record 51-yard field goal in the second quarter, also used the offensive outburst to set a school mark for most points in a season (324). The win improved Deer Park’s overall record to 8-1, which tied the 1992 Stags for the best season start in school history after nine games.
“You never know how it’s going to go,” said Deer Park head coach Keith Stamps on his team’s strong start.
