Lady Stags use balanced attack to get past Cards

January 4, 2012

The Deer Park girls basketball team, using a balanced scoring attack, defeated the Medical Lake Cardinals 51-37 on Tuesday.
Eight Lady Stags, led by Tessa Heins’ 13 points, entered the score book in the Great Northern League opener for both schools.
Deer Park (5-4 overall) jumped out to an early 9-3 advantage, only to have the Cardinals (1-8) take a 16-12 lead early in the second quarter.
Senior Danielle Beltrame answered with a pair of three-pointers to give Deer Park a 20-18 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half.

Cards surge past Stags with second half surge

January 4, 2012

The Medical Lake Cardinals, using a 13-3 third quarter run, defeated the Deer Park Stags 57-45 on Tuesday in the Great Northern League opener for both schools.
The win improved the Cardinals’ overall record to 4-5, the same mark as the Stags. The loss was Deer Park’s 13th straight in GNL play.
The Cardinals, who led 30-29 at halftime, scored the first five points on the third quarter.
A Colton Mead three-pointer broke a five-minute scoring drought by the Stags, only to see the Cardinals go on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 43-32.

R-side's Ahrens to face old friend at Sun Dome Shootout

December 28, 2011

It is understandable if Riverside head boys basketball coach KC Ahrens has a flashback to his teenage years when the Rams face Columbia-Burbank on Friday as part of the Sun Dome Shootout.
The Coyotes are coached by D.J. Traver, a teammate of Ahrens at Riverside in the mid-1990s.
Traver, a member of the Rams’ 1993 state championship football team, would eventually move to the Tri-Cities and graduate from River View High School.

Molina ready for another Mat Classic trip

December 21, 2011

Deer Park’s Jesse Molina has seen both sides of the Mat Classic and he doesn’t need to be reminded on which one he likes best.
The 132-pound junior earned a berth to the state wrestling championship in his freshman season, but was forced to watch last year’s proceedings as a spectator after not getting past the regional round.
“It takes a lot of work to get there (the Mat Classic),” Molina said.
A wrestler since his grade school days, Molina is prepared to get a closer look at the Tacoma Dome than last year view as a spectator.

Lady Stags get an early start in beating Lady Rams

December 14, 2011

The Deer Park girls basketball team unleashed a strong defense and uncanny free throw shooting to defeat rival Riverside 62-48 on Dec. 13.
The Lady Stags rushed out to a 13-4 lead in the opening quarter, thanks, in part, to Tessa Heins work on the free throw line. The senior guard hit 9 of 10 free throws in the first eight minutes of the game.

Rams rally past Stags

December 14, 2011

The Riverside boys basketball team, sparked by the play of freshman point guard Taylor Axtell, rallied to defeat rival Deer Park 59-54 in a non-league game on Dec. 13.
The Rams, hurt by cold shooting and the Stags’ strong inside game, trailed 45-36 going into the fourth quarter.
A short time later, Axtell, who tossed in a team-high 16 points, took over. He scored seven straight points to trim the Stag lead to 47-46 with 4 minutes to play.

December 11, 2011

The Deer Park wrestling team, bolstered by championships by Joe Grable at 138 pounds and C.J. Rodriguez at 220 pounds, placed third at the highly competitive Inland Empire Tournament at Central Valley last weekend.
Mead won the title with 205 points, followed by Post Falls at 194.5 and Deer Park at 180.5
In addition to two individual championships, Deer Park’s Aaron Klauder (106 pounds), Cody Dehn (126), Cole Harris (132) and Dylan Miller (160) brought home runner-up medals.

Stags overpower Bantams in GNL wrestling opener

December 8, 2011

In a match-up of two of the top Class 2A wrestling programs in the state, the top ranked Deer Park Stags easily dispatched the 16th ranked Clarkston Bantams 58-18 on Wednesday.
It was the Great Northern League opener for both schools.
The Stags, who trailed 6-0 after the first match (at 160 pounds), won the next four to 16-6 lead.
Among the wins in that stretch was a hard-pounding 4-2 decision by Dylan Miller at 170 pounds over Brock Beeler. Miller, a state runner-up last season, scored the win with a takedown with only 2 second left in the match.

Stags hold off Eagles for second straight win

December 7, 2011

For the second straight game, the Deer Park boys basketball team jumped out to an early lead then held on in the second half. The latest victim of this scenario was the Lakeside Eagles, who fell 63-55 on Tuesday.
The non-league win improved Deer Park’s record to 2-0 while Lakeside fell to 1-1.
The Stags, who led 18-8 after one quarter, expanded the lead to 16 points midway through the second quarter before the Eagles started chipping away at the margin. Deer Park regrouped to take a 50-39 lead with eight minutes to play and held off Lakeside down the stretch.
