Area schools release fall football skeds

Area football teams have released their 2012 football schedules to reflect the new look Great Northern and Northeast A leagues.
The Deer Park Stags, the defending GNL champions, will open their season at Chewelah on Aug. 31. It will be the fifth straight year the Stags have opened the season against the Cougars in a non-league game.
Riverside will open its season on Aug. 31 at Timberlake, The Tigers defeated the Rams 17-6 in last year’s season opener.
The Stags and Rams will face off against each other on Sept. 7 at Riverside.

Stags rule over Class 2A wrestling ranks for another year

It was truly a team effort this time around as all nine Stags earned state medals, including two state titles, the biggest individual hardware haul in school history.
The effort also assured the Stags their fifth straight state Class 2A team title with a 154-134 decision over runner-up Centralia.
Deer Park trailed Centralia 32-23 after the first round. By the end of the first day, the Stags has closed the gap to 68-67.
“If we do our job we’ll be OK,” said Deer Park head coach Matt Jorgensen after the first day’s results.

Greyhounds hold off Lady Stags in playoff opener

The Pullman Greyhounds survived a flurry of long range shooting by the Deer Park Lady Stags to win the opening round District VII tournament 51-49 on Tuesday.
The win propelled the Greyhounds (9-11) into the double-elimination portion of the tournament, while the Lady Stags ended their season at 11-10.
Trailing 49-38 with 2:14 to play, Deer Park closed the margin on 3-pointers from Danielle Beltrame, Tessa Heins and Alison Ruygrok but could not catch the Greyhounds.

Change of heart: Konzal allowed the wrestle

Deer Park’s Jake Konzal, disqualified from last week’s District VII wrestling tournament in a weight classification dispute, made a surprising appearance at this weekend’s Region IV tournament.
The district disqualification occurred after Stag head coach Matt Jorgensen decided to move Konzal, who was battling an illness, up a weight class.
Jorgensen said he followed league rules in making the decision and it was met with approval by the Great Northern League coaches.

Late run carries Bulldogs past Chargers

The Kettle Falls Bulldogs, using a 13-0 fourth quarter run, defeated the Springdale Chargers 40-36 on Thursday in the opening round of the District VII Class 2A tournament.
The win propelled the Bulldogs (3-18 overall) into the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Chargers, who defeated the Bulldogs twice during the regular season, ended their season with a 4-17 record.

Lady Charger offense stymied in tourney loss

The Republic Tigers wasted little time dominating the Springdale Lady Chargers 43-30 in the opening round of the District VII Class 2B tournament on Thursday.
The win propelled Republic (14-6) into the double-elimination portion of the tournament while Springdale ended its season with a 4-17 record.
The Tigers held the Lady Chargers scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the game as they built an 18-0 lead.
Springdale finally broke the scoreless streak on a pair of free throws from Spring Hamilton. Republic answered with a 3-pointer by Gabby Jessen and took a 22-7 lead at halftime.

Bantams have ‘inside’ track in downing Stags

The Deer Park Stags had no answer for Clarkston’s inside game, especially in the first half, as the Bantams rolled to a 62-42 win on Tuesday.
Clarkston’s power game helped the Bantams build a 15-point lead early in the second quarter.
The Stags managed to cut the lead to 36-24 on a pair of 3-pointers from Uconn Peone, only to have the Bantams’ Drew Adams answer with a long range jumper just before intermission.
For most of the second half, the Bantams were content to play a ball control offense.
The Stags’ last hurrah came on a Zach Mohr 3-pointer that closed the game to 45-34.

Rams fall to Grizziles; open district tourney on Friday

When the going got tough, the Newport Grizzlies turned to “Wiley Time” to get thing moving in the right direction.
Jake Wiley, the Grizzlies’ 6-foot-7 senior, scored a game-high 22 points (12 in the second half) as Newport put away the Riverside Rams 50-41 on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Newport, which led on 19-17 at halftime, opened up a 40-30 lead in the third quarter on the strength of 10 points from Wiley.
The Rams (0-10 in the Northeast A League) refused to go away easily.

Newport's second half run carries them past Riverside

The Newport girls basketball team awoke its sleeping offense to pull away from the Riverside Lady Rams 57-35 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Lady Grizzlies, who trailed 19-14 midway through the second quarter, went on an 11-3 run to open the third quarter to break the game open.
Sparking the Newport run was junior guard Courtney Weise, who buried a pair of 3-pointers. Her second long-range shot gave Newport a 36-22 lead.
Weise would later earn an old fashioned 3-point play to extend the Lady Grizzlies’ advantage to 45-24 going into the fourth quarter.

Long-range scoring surge helps carry Stags past Knights

The Deer Park Stags, sparked by a trio of 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half, defeated the East Valley Knights 65-62 on Friday.
The win assured Deer Park (4-5 in the Great Northern League) a District VII tournament berth.
“That (the scoring spurt) was big for us,” said Stag head coach Ken Ryan.
Zach Mohr, Uconn Peone and Caleb Guske keyed the second quarter offensive blitz by each sinking 3-pointers.
‘We have to win the last 3 minutes,’ Ryan told his team late in the first half.
