Freeman spikers sweep Riverside

The Freeman Scotties, staking claim as the top volleyball team in the Northeast A League, took care of the Riverside Lady Rams 25-10, 25-20, 25-18 on Thursday.
The Scotties, behind three kills from Kaela Straw, opened up a 10-1 lead in the first game.
Riverside (5-4 in NE-A play) made a brief run with three straight points behind the serving of Courtney Davis. Freeman, (7-1) however, responded with six straight points to stretch the Scottie lead to 16-5.
Two aces by Straw gave the Scotties a 20-7 lead and were never threatened the rest of the game.

Deer Park out distances Clarkston in GNL match-ups

The Deer Park boys cross country team lived up to its No. 3 ranking in the state’s Class 2A ranks with a overwhelming 15-50 win over Clarkston on Wednesday in the Stags’ lone home meet this season.
Nolan Woodward led the charge over the 3-mile course with a 17-minute, 7-second performance, good enough to lead the field. Teammate Kody Turner finished second (17:16), followed over the finish line by fellow Stags Sam Davis (17:38), Brady Bollum (17:42) and Coltan Boswell 17:45).

Rams surge past Bulldogs in NE-A opener

The Riverside Rams kept things in balance, especially in the first half, in their home opener on Friday.
The Rams ran the ball 14 times in the first quarter and the same number in the second quarter as they built a 22-6 halftime lead over the Kettle Falls Bulldogs. Riverside stayed with the ground-oriented attack in the second half to cement a 29-6 win in the Northeast A League opener for both schools.
“It’s nice to get a league win under your belt, that’s for sure,” Griggs said.

New football rules in place this fall

With the high school football season arriving this weekend (Deer Park is at Chewelah and Riverside travels to Timberlake, both at 7 p.m. on Friday) there are eight rules for high school football players this fall.
The rules, adopted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), includes requiring a player to sit out one play if their helmet comes off while the ball is live.
In cases where the helmet comes completely off without it being directly attributable to a foul by the opponent, the player will have to leave the game for at least one down.

Zac Farnam leaves Stags to join Grizzlies

Zac Farnam, who has given a decade of his football life to the Deer Park program as a player and later as an assistant coach, is heading north this season.
Farnam has taken over the duties of the head football coach at Newport High School.
A Spokane native, Farnam came to Deer Park as a fifth grader and became acquainted with football as a middle schooler. A 2002 DPHS grad, he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver and cornerback under head coach Doug McGill. Farnam was part of the 2000 Great Northern League football championship team.

Griggs starts work with Ram

The first steps in the new look Riverside football program were taken this summer.
New football coach Tom Griggs held a pair of camps in June to allow players to get a chance to become somewhat familiar with the program.
Griggs, who came to Riverside after a one-year stint as head coach at Rochester (Wash.) High School, held a mini-camp at the end of the school year. A more intense one-week camp was held last week.

DP's Farnam named new Newport football coach

June 15, 2012

Deer Park assistant football coach Zac Farnam has left the program to take the head varsity job at Newport High School.
Farnam, a 2002 DPHS graduate, had been part of Stag head coach Keith Stamps’ staff for the past six years.
He takes over a Grizzly program that went 7-3 last season.
Farnam’s departure will also leave holes in the Stags’ boys basketball and baseball teams, as he served as an assistant coach with both programs.

Names of special hunt permits winners available online

June 14, 2012

Hunters who submitted applications for 2012 special-hunt permits can check the results of this year’s drawing on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) website.
The results of the random, computerized drawing were verified June 8 and are available at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/specialhuntlookup. Holders of the special permits can hunt at times and locations beyond those authorized by a general hunting license.

Bender, McKinney receive Fred Safford awards

Riverside High School seniors Derrick Bender and Kati McKinney were named the winners of the Fred Safford Award, honoring tschool year’s top athletes.
Bender earned All-Northeast A League honors on the football field last fall and won the state 210-pound Class A wrestling championship in February.
McKinney, who earned All-NEA softball honors this spring, was also a member of the Lady Rams’ volleyball team.

Mohr, Brazington named DPHS's top athletes

Three-sport Deer Park High School sports standouts Zach Mohr and Kimmie Brazington were named the winners of the Max Sanchez Award as the top athletes for the 2011-12 school year.
Mohr, who earned All-Great Northern League honors in football last fall. He was also a member of the basketball (he was an All-GNL player as a junior) and baseball teams, where he threw the first no-hitter at the school in more than a decade.
