Fast-starting Stags best Blackhawks

The Deer Park Stags built an early 16-0 lead on their way to a 44-30 Great Northern League wrestling win over Cheney on Wednesday.
Tysen Jorgensen got the ball rolling with first period pin over Sam Hobbs in the 126-pound match. His victory was followed by a 13-3 win by Dean Lockwood over the Blackhawks’ Cameron Wiseman and a first-period pin by Brandon Field over Francisco Martinez.
Cheney narrowed the margin to 28-18 before 220-pound Cody Devore scored a pin of Jacob Hill to give Deer Park an almost insurmountable lead.

Former Deer Park pair arrested in Spokane

A pair of former Deer Park residents were arrested on Monday following a stolen vehicle pursuit in Spokane.
Gary Todd, 32, and Christina Edwards, 27, face various felony charges stemming from the incident that started on the lower South Hill around 8 p.m.
Spokane Police said they spotted Todd driving away with a stolen 2013 Ford Focus on the South Hill. A short time later the car was spotted in Browne’s Addition.

Search on for Deer Park shooting suspects

Spokane County Sheriff's deputies are conducting a ground and air search for suspects involved in a apparent shooting on east "D" Street in Deer Park Saturday night.
Two suspects were seen leaving the area wearing light jackets. One person has been detained by police.
There is no report on the status of the shooting victim who was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Mary H. Engle, 98

January 2, 2014

Mary Helena Engle, age 98, a long-time resident of Deer Park, passed away on Dec. 23, 2013, in Spokane. She was born in Old Kettle Falls Wash., on Oct. 31, 1915.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl, of 63 years.
She was the loving mother of Earl L Engle, Danny G Engle, Christina Engle, Tamara Wetherell, Penelope Coffey, Deborah Engle and James Batson Engle; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and five stepgrandchildren.
Mrs. Engle was a charter member of the Deer Park Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Raymond E. Turner, 75

December 30, 2013

Raymond E. Turner, age 75, passed away on Dec. 25, 2013, in Chattaroy.
He was born on March 31, 1938, to Harland and Betty Turner in Tonasket, Wash. Ray married Arla Jean Larson on April 22, 1982. They made their home in Chattaroy with their daughter Mindy Longwill.
Ray was an ambitious, fun, loving man! He worked as an electrical engineer for most of his professional career and had been involved in many projects over the years including the original Seattle King Dome.
When he was able to he loved to go camping, fishing, hunting, and mostly "have a beer" with his friends.

Terry Tess, 66

Terry Tess, age 66, passed away peacefully on Dec. 29, 2013.
He was born on May 20, 1947, to Robert and Meryle Tess. He graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1965 and was self-employed until he went to work for Central Pre-Mix until his retirement in 2003.
He enjoyed hunting, golfing, outdoor sports and horse racing.
He is survived by his wife, Julie; his sister, Colleen Prophet; two daughters, Brandi Pankey (Jared) and Shasta Tess; three grandchildren, Alexis and Brayden Pankey and Kyler Tess; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Cecil L. Dupey, 82

Cecil L. Dupey, age 82, passed away on Dec. 24, 2013, in Mount Vernon, Wash.
Cecil was born to Frank and Lillie McGuire Dupey, lived in Milan and graduated from Deer Park High School with the class of 1952. He served in the Korean War, graduated from Eastern Washington University, attended the University of Washington and taught school at Orcas Island and Sedro Woolley, Wash. He lived and worked in the Methow Valley before returning to Sedro Woolley.
Cecil was a gifted musician and composer; he enjoyed nothing more than sharing his music.

DOH releases top baby names

The numbers are in and Liam and Sophia are the top baby names in Washington from 2012, according to the Department of Health, which tracks a variety of state vital statistics, including births, deaths, marriages, and divorces.
In 2012 there were 87,415 babies born in the state. The most popular day for births in 2012 was Friday, June 28 when there were 311 Washington babies born.

Taller Stags hold off Cougars

The Deer Park Stags, helped by five Nate Guske free throws in the fourth quarter, slid past Chewelah 61-57 on Tuesday.
Deer Park head coach Chad Hand, who was not pleased with all aspects of his team’s performance, said he would take the victory in the Stags’ home opener.
The Stags (2-1) broke a 41-41 tie late in third quarter and held off numerous charges by the Cougars down the stretch. Two Guske free throws were followed by offensive rebound basket by Canyon Nielson to increase the Deer Park lead to 58-47 before Chewelah’s Mckenzie Miller hit a 3-pointer to keep the Cougars close.

Chewelah buries DP girls with second half surge

The Chewelah girls basketball team used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to surge past the Deer Park Lady Stags 47-20 on Tuesday.
Leading 18-15 at halftime, the Lady Cougars (1-2) used their strength underneath the basket to pull away from the Lady Stags (0-3), who were held to only one field goal in the third quarter, an offensive rebound by Siera English with 40 seconds left in the quarter.
