An elderly woman was killed and her husband was taken to a local hospital following a two-car, head-on accident at Swenson and Woolard roads in southern Stevens County on Tuesday night.
According to the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, 17-year-old Justin Price tried to avoid hitting a disabled vehicle on the side of Swenson Road at around 7:30 p.m. and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting the couple's vehicle.

Shirley Ray (Viles) Agar, 86, passed away at her home in Colville on Jan. 27, 2013.
Shirley is survived by her four children, Debbie (Max) Egger of Colville, Bruce (Mary) Agar of Thermopolis, Wy., Matt (Debbie) Agar of Ontario, Ore., and Muriel Badgley of Spokane. Shirley is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17-plus great-grandchildren, one sister, Nancy Sanders, and numerous nieces and nephews.
February 27th
Deer Park High School has filled out its 2013 spring sports coaching roster.
Nicholas Schuerman, who coached the Chewelah-based 49ers American Legion baseball team last summer, will assume the head baseball coaching duties at DPHS from Bryan Schutz. His staff will include first-year assistants Kenneth Parker and Cole Young.
Natalie Baydo, a 2007 DPHS grad and a former Lady Stag player, will take over as head coach of the girls tennis program. Baydo replaces Debbie Spray, who resigned because of time constraints.
February 21st
Larry Elwood Morrill, 77, as born on Nov. 7, 1935, in Milan, Wash., to Eldon B. and Roberta (Coons) Morrill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eldon B., 18 months old.
He is survived by his brother, Dana (Ruth) and many nephews, nieces and cousins in the community.
Larry never married. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle man who loved children. He also never met a dog he didn't like.
He spent his school years in Colville and Newport. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and many local sawmills and farms in the area.
The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help to identify an elderly male who was found deceased on Feb. 13 on a mountain east of Addy by a citizen who was hiking in the area.
The death does not appear to be criminal in nature.
The male is thought to be transient and had no identification with him. He is approximately 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-5 and weighs approximately 128 pounds. He had salt-and-pepper long hair that was pulled back in a ponytail and a long beard. The male has brown eyes and a mole above the right eye on the eyelid.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying a person who robbed the pharmacy at Albertson’s on U.S. Highway 395 and Hastings Road on Thursday.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, a male came up to the pharmacy counter at around 11 a.m. threw a red re-usable grocery bag on the counter and demanded “narcotics.” The pharmacist put the narcotics in the bag and the male left the store.
Sarah “Suzie” Krieger of Deer Park, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday Feb. 10, 2013, at the Adagio Family Home in Everett, Wash., at the age of 93.
She was born on April 12, 1919, in Plentywood, Mont., the daughter of Hans and Grace Hardersen. She was raised in Montana and Seattle and graduated from Bothell High School in Bothell, Wash.
Three days after his 89th birthday, Leslie Preston Yates died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, following a short battle with pneumonia.
Born in Bozeman, Mont., one of five children of Tom and Altha Yates, he graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane Valley and began college studies at Whitworth, before serving in the Army Signal Corps toward the end of World War II, serving in France and Belgium.

Deer Park Middle School was shut down for a short time on Thursday afternoon.
The lockdown was predicated after that two individuals were walking near the school carrying rifles. It was called off after Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies contacted the individuals and transported them out of the area.
On the school district website, Superintendent Becky Berg praised the DPMS staff and students for their actions during the lockdown.
Mary Walker School District patrons approved a four-year, $225,000 annual maintenance and operations levy.
The levy request, replaced the current $225,000 annual levy, received 56 percent approval (312-245).
The levy will cost school district property owners $1.40 for every $1,000 of assessed property, according to school district officials. The current levy has an assessment rate of $1.68.
The approval also means the school district will receive $417,814 in state levy equalization funds. If the levy had been rejected, the school district would not receive any equalization funds.
